Your Potential to be Fearless

I am writing this article on Halloween, the scariest night of the year, so I thought it would be a good time to think about fears and phobias. Nearly everyone has a fear of something and quite often these fears will limit us in some way. A fear of flying may stop us from leaving the country on holiday; a fear of public speaking may reduce our career prospects; and a fear of crowds of people could even stop us leaving the house. Even the most minor fears will also be stopping us living our life to the full in some way.

As a first step towards becoming fearless, think about what you are scared of and write them all down as a list. You may be surprised how many there are - when I first did this I nearly filled a page!

Now next to each fear you have named, note how this is limiting you. In other words, what is this fear stopping you from doing or achieving.

Next go back through the list and imagine what your life would be like if all these limits were removed and you could do anything you wanted, when you wanted. Wouldn't that be liberating?

The next stage is to apply EFT to as many of these fears as you want to, and why not eradicate them all? Why would you want to hold on to any of them? When you have a true fear or phobia the last thing you want to do if 'face your fear' so I'm going to talk you through how to apply EFT in a pain free way.

First of all imagine yourself being confronted with the fear. Whether it's a spider, a great height or an interview panel, picture it in your mind as vividly as possible. (If even imagining the fear would be far too distressing for you, skip this stage to keep the process pain free).

Once you have that image grade your fear on a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being no fear and 10 the most intense fear. Then apply a round of EFT using the phrase: "Even though I have this fear of ..... I deeply and completely accept myself". Remember to keep the image vivid in your mind as you tap each point and say "this fear of...." to keep you focussed. (If you skipped the first stage to avoid becoming too distressed, when you tap the points still say "this fear" but don't picture the problem as vividly. After a couple of rounds this way, you may feel that you won't be as distressed and you can try imagining what you are scared of more vividly.)

After a round of EFT think about your fear trigger again and see how you are on the 0 to 10 scale. Keep going with more EFT rounds until you reach 1 or 0.

Once you are happy thinking about the thing that made you scared, now try confronting yourself with it. If it's easier for you, and possible with your fear, use a photograph at first. Tap more rounds of EFT if there is some fear left, and continue until you feel completely happy being confronted by the thing that once scared you. To make sure this is a pain free process, you shouldn't do this until you really are a zero. Why suffer when you don't need to?
